“Independent journalists in Hungary operate in a deeply hostile climate characterized by systemic obstruction, political pressure, and public vilification,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe representative. “Whoever wins the election must take immediate, concrete action to reverse this authoritarian trajectory, dismantle the complex machinery of state control, and align Hungary with European standards on media freedom, transparency, and the rule of law.
